The Gatewood Cape is the ONLY poncho-style Tarp to provide complete 360° protection. Since its introduction in 2006, it has been carried over hundreds of thousands of trail miles. It’s provided shelter in everything from high mountain snow-choked ridges to lush forest trails.

*To completely repel water, shelters need to have sealer applied to the seams before use.
*Shelters including a seam sealing service may not ship immediately.
  • The Gatewood Cape's unique 360-Degree Protection provides full coverage either when worn as a cape or used as a shelter. Unlike ponchos, capes don't have long slits along the sides. While the poncho may allow for more ventilation, it does little to keep out windblown rain. Dual zipper pulls on the front of the Gatewood Cape allow you to regulate ventilation while still providing full protection. Plus, the open skirted design allows fresh air to enter the bottom.

As a shelter, the Gatewood Cape provides significantly enhanced protection when compared to your typical poncho/tarp. Its sturdy pyramid design easily sheds rain or snow and wind simply flows around it. Any sudden change in wind direction in the middle of the night won't leave you scrambling to re-orient your shelter or force you deeper into your bivy. Unlike a traditional tarp, the Gatewood Cape is shaped to eliminate all exposed sides -- leaving you safe and secure.

With 35 square feet of coverage under the shelter's canopy, you've got plenty of room for you and your gear. Depending upon conditions, you can even adjust the vestibule to different heights to increase ventilation. A long zipper on the vestibule makes opening and closing the shelter a snap.

For the adventuresome day hiker, the Gatewood Cape makes the perfect addition to your 10 essentials survival kit. It packs down incredibly small and provides peace of mind knowing you've got excellent protection close at hand.

For added bug protection, the Gatewood Cape mates with the Serenity NetTent. Together they keep both the rain and bugs at bay. Providing you with secure and comfortable space.

After spending several years coming up with the design. The Gatewood Cape became my primary shelter for years. My good friend Billy Goat has racked up over 10,000 miles with his Gatewood Cape and Serenity NetTent.

    Minimalist's favorite!

Love the multi-use and ultralight features. Large enough of a shelter for my 5'5" short stature. Works great as a rain poncho. As with any ultralight gear, there are compromises. I will have to be extra careful to avoid snagging and tearing it on a branch as I walk through less-used trails; only time will tell if I can manage this. As with any tarp shelter, I will need to use a head net to keep bugs away. All in all a good set of trade-offs for me. Haven't used it in the rain, so I can't say anything about water retention, etc...

    Gatewood Cape + Serenity Net-Tent

Not only was service phenomenal- I had several questions and Graham answered them within an hour- but this tent coupled with the Serenity Net-Tent is a great combination. Camping in 100°F weather in Texas, the ability to increase ventilation by pitching the tent off the ground and pulling back both vestibules is a great feature to have. The tent is also extremely simple to set up, taking less than 8 minutes on the first try, and very structurally sound. I would recommend taking a thin foam pad to place in the Net-Tent if using an inflatable pad, as an inflatable pad will slide around if on uneven ground. This is to be expected of the material and/or could be remedied by optimal site selection, but important to note none-the-less. Highly recommend.

    Excellent multi-function ul solution

Bought a Gatewood Cape a couple of weeks ago to replace my previous ul fastpacking/runpacking shelter - a hooped waterproof bivy. For 200 grams less than the bivy I now have a tent, raingear and pack cover. I've now used the Gatewood twice in the BC Coast Mountains at elevations around 1800m. On the second use we had heavy rain and wind from around 3am to 9am. In tent mode the leeward side of the Gatewood did billow inwards a little with wind gusts, but not enough to touch me as I lay in my bag. No wind driven rain came in through the windward side, and no rain splashed in under the leeward facing doors. I stayed dry and comfortable. In the morning I had enough space to eat, dress and pack. The Gatewood did just fine as a rain poncho for the 25km run back to the car. The ends clip up to shorten it, and with an improvised shock cord belt, running on techy mountain trails was not a problem. Great solution that helps keep my base weight super low with few compromises. Wish I'd bought one years ago.
