The Gatewood Cape is the ONLY poncho-style Tarp to provide complete 360° protection. Since its introduction in 2006, it has been carried over hundreds of thousands of trail miles. It’s provided shelter in everything from high mountain snow-choked ridges to lush forest trails.

*To completely repel water, shelters need to have sealer applied to the seams before use.
*Shelters including a seam sealing service may not ship immediately.
  • The Gatewood Cape's unique 360-Degree Protection provides full coverage either when worn as a cape or used as a shelter. Unlike ponchos, capes don't have long slits along the sides. While the poncho may allow for more ventilation, it does little to keep out windblown rain. Dual zipper pulls on the front of the Gatewood Cape allow you to regulate ventilation while still providing full protection. Plus, the open skirted design allows fresh air to enter the bottom.

As a shelter, the Gatewood Cape provides significantly enhanced protection when compared to your typical poncho/tarp. Its sturdy pyramid design easily sheds rain or snow and wind simply flows around it. Any sudden change in wind direction in the middle of the night won't leave you scrambling to re-orient your shelter or force you deeper into your bivy. Unlike a traditional tarp, the Gatewood Cape is shaped to eliminate all exposed sides -- leaving you safe and secure.

With 35 square feet of coverage under the shelter's canopy, you've got plenty of room for you and your gear. Depending upon conditions, you can even adjust the vestibule to different heights to increase ventilation. A long zipper on the vestibule makes opening and closing the shelter a snap.

For the adventuresome day hiker, the Gatewood Cape makes the perfect addition to your 10 essentials survival kit. It packs down incredibly small and provides peace of mind knowing you've got excellent protection close at hand.

For added bug protection, the Gatewood Cape mates with the Serenity NetTent. Together they keep both the rain and bugs at bay. Providing you with secure and comfortable space.

After spending several years coming up with the design. The Gatewood Cape became my primary shelter for years. My good friend Billy Goat has racked up over 10,000 miles with his Gatewood Cape and Serenity NetTent.

    • Micro Buckles connect the harness to cape for easy installation and removal.
    • Full 360-Degree protection when set up as a shelter or worn as rain gear.
    • Full Zippered Entrance makes entering and exiting the shelter a snap.
    • Adjustable Vestibule Height allows increased ventilation while maintaining adequate rain protection.
    • Side Snaps for shortening the long sides when worn as a cape.
    • Floating Canopy allows the canopy to be set to different heights depending upon conditions.
    • Integrated Map / Night Stash Pocket with zipper closure to keep stuff contained. Pocket also doubles as the stuff sack.
    • Center Pole Support significantly improves the ability of the shelter to handle wind and snow loads.
    • Ultralight Waterproof Canopy is made from high strength Silicone Nylon.
    • Extremely Easy Setup requires only six stakes.

    I love it

I’m 5’7” and there was lot of room to lay down. Had a suuper windy night one night and everything heldup. Guying out the extra two spots would have helped I’m sure . Got a small wear and tear hole without doing much more than setting it up as a tarp though. Still 10/10 since it’s a 360 coverage poncho tarp.

    I LOVE my Gatewood Cape

This is perfect!! I have nothing bad to say about my Gatewood Cape. Everything has remained bone dry underneath it after several days of consistent heavy rains and winds. There is plenty of room under there for myself and my gear. It pitches very fast and easily and with just 1 pole. Pair it with a bug bivy, a regular bivy the Serenity Net tent or use it alone, depending on the season or what you like, you will not find a better shelter!

Bit of a learning curve, but great so far

Took this plus the serenity tent for its first overnight in the forest near home (Kentucky) on a mild night with no problems and it was easy to use, so it came with me to the Grand Canyon for a four night expedition. We had crazy wind two nights and the tent stayed up with no problem. One night I pitched it too low to the ground and did not have quite enough room, but made adjustments later that helped. Our last night out, there was a steady rain all night and I stayed dry. Have not used it in a heavy downpour yet. Still learning how to use it as rain gear. Added clips for the tie outs to make them easy to remove so I don't trip on them. I have been very pleased so far and with more practice think this will be my go-to tent.

    First time use in Winter

Perfect! Used it with my Bristlecone bivy after a full day backpacking over snow and ice packed trails. Set it in about 8-12 inches of frozen snow/ice. Breezy cold night.. about 18° with slight wind. Woke up in morning to minor snow flurries. The Gatewood Cape is a Palace!! So much room under it, for myself, large size Xtherm pad, 0° quilt, my pack, my boots and whatever other gear I had. It is lightweight.. and packs so small. I love that you dont need a stuff sack for it (one less item to look for in morning), in that it packs into its own pocket. The pocket on inside is large enough to store some things in it if needed.. great idea for sure!!! The Gatewood Cape is Awesome!!!!

    Minimalist's favorite!

Love the multi-use and ultralight features. Large enough of a shelter for my 5'5" short stature. Works great as a rain poncho. As with any ultralight gear, there are compromises. I will have to be extra careful to avoid snagging and tearing it on a branch as I walk through less-used trails; only time will tell if I can manage this. As with any tarp shelter, I will need to use a head net to keep bugs away. All in all a good set of trade-offs for me. Haven't used it in the rain, so I can't say anything about water retention, etc...
