Patrol pack for miles after miles

As an early customer of Ron's original SMD products, I still love and use the original 19 oz. Moonlight pack. But I've been dismayed as the weight and the features of their packs crept upward over the years.

But as a uniformed volunteer patroller (not quite a ranger) assisting visitors in a large wilderness state park, the Wy'east pack has proven to be the perfect tool for several 12-20 mile day hikes per month. I often need to carry trail work tools, a major first-aid kit, a heavy 2-way radio with spare batteries, my own 10-essentials, and in dry seasons I also need 4-6 liters of water. Though I was an early-adopter of his pack, and in spite of it being lighter than almost anything else of similar volume, it has held up to all of that and shows modest wear. If I do wear it out, I would buy another.

All things you need, little of what you don't

My second SMD backpack (OG Swift!) and 4th SMD product, this bag exceeding a high expectations set by those.

It's a bit big for just a quick hike, but the lazy dog doesn't carry his water so I'm usually loaded up. This bag would carry a sub10lb weekend load ok - but I bought it for my day hike habit. In this use I don't mind a little extra weight for a lot extra usability. Pockets and straps and such are well-done, all things you need, little of what you don't.

The quality & details like the 3D lid elevate this from a cottage-gear bag to "is that from a retail store?" still at the cottage-gear weight, and deep pockets for the dual 1L bottles, sit pad etc.

I don't LOVE shoulder pockets, and these aren't removable. But they hold a phone or dog cookies well so I'll adjust

I'm a really picky shopper and keep coming back to this company for the same reasons. We balance a lot of variables (cost, weight, ... ) and they get them right

    Awesome bag!

I purchase this bag to hike 130 miles of the JMT in the Sierra Nevada and it worked flawlessly.  Input this thing through the ringer and ended up very pleased.  I really like the wider than average shoulder straps and overall how light the bag is.  The exterior pouch held my solar panel perfectly and the deeper side pouches worked for all the items I needed quick access suck as my nalgene, steripen, and snacks.   My only small gripe is the waste belt.  I don’t think it really has much use given how small it is and the loops that hold the belt in place actually chewed I to my back and ripped holes in to my shirt until I finally looped and fastened the belt behind the bag.  Overall. Very pleased and would buy again without hesitation.

    Three Weeks in Europe

I realize that this is supposed to be a "daypack" but I used it as my travel backpack for a three week trip to Scandinavia and it was perfect! Everything I needed fit inside: clothes, toiletries, books, water bottle, etc. It is lightweight, so I could carry it all over town and on hikes, no problem. It fits easily under an airplane seat or in an overhead bin, and roomy enough to carry everything I needed for my trip. I appreciate the little pockets and designated spaces in the pack for small items that I always have to dig for, like lip balm, sunscreen, or keys. The packing pods are great for keeping all of the larger items contained and organized as well. This is an excellent, versatile pack for travel, day hiking, or everyday use.

    Don’t love it

I was excited about this backpack. I’ve used an Osprey Sirrus 24 for years and I got sick of how little space there was in it. Starting with the likes: large side pockets for water and other items, nice front pocket, very light and spacious.

The fit of this was odd, for both me (5’4 woman) and my partner (6’0 man). It was uncomfortable where the backpack shoulder straps meet the top of the backpack, for both of us which is interesting. They are too close together, so put uncomfortable pressure on your traps. It maybe would have made sense to have weight lifter straps on these, even though you shouldn’t be carrying a ton of weight in a day pack. Not sure, it’s just off. Even when packed well, it kind of folds in half in an odd way when you wear it. I wish I had gone for the Gossamer Gear equivalent daypack, since I’ve loved all of my packs from them. Now we have a $200 backpack that I don’t think we’ll be choosing to use much.
