I have a few UL tarps and tents and this is absolutely my favorite for summer. I took this on the Wonderland trail and Timberline trail this year. It’s very spacious for one person and fits all my gear in the tarp with me. Highly recommend and would love a version in Ultra or Dyneema.
I have been using the Deschutes Plus for 5 years now, in some extremely buggy country mainly (wind river range).
Needless to say, its almost the perfect shelter. Perfect blend of light, small, bug and weather proof, while still being one of the cheaper shelters I own. Its small packed size (between a softball and a volleyball) means it can fit in any pocket of a backpack.
Replaces a tarp for the same weight while being easier to set up, and more bug and weather proof!
After some time backpacking with this shelter in a myriad of conditions I have came to the conclusion that I very much enjoy the Deschutes Plus. The shelter provided more than adequate rain protection in heavy storms and excellent bug protection. Ventilation isn't amazing, probably because of the netting but I generally have at least one of the doors wide open unless I am in a buggy, dewy, or rainy area. I have found that using the guyline attachments provide much more headroom and I prefer to always use them. Also when it is buggy, I generally set items on top of the netting as the a breeze can blow the netting up and allow a swath of mosquitos in. Overall I am happy with my purchase and it is my go-to shelter for going solo.
After setting this up once in the park (city living;-), I took it on an overnight bike trip, along with the serenity tent and a pole. The setup went great and the net inside was surprisingly roomy, with more floor space than my Big Agnes Tiger Wall 1P. I haven't sealed it yet but I knew it would be dry and there was no problem with any condensation. I was warm and comfortable all night and was pleasantly surprised with how easy it was to enter and exit.
I like this tarp, it was my first time camp with this tarp. There is a big space for cooking, rest. When you use the tracking pole around 125cm, the ventilation is awesome.
Thanks for this tarp and arrival in time.
