Deschutes Plus

16 OZ - 450 G SOLO TARP

The Deschutes and Deschutes Plus are lean, mean, no-frills, down and dirty shelters for ultralight hikers on the move. They pack so small and light they might literally get lost in your pack, yet they are large enough for a comfortable night’s rest without the claustrophobia of a small tarp. With a full 360 degrees of protection, there’s no need to carry an additional bivy.

*To completely repel water, shelters need to have sealer applied to the seams before use.
*Shelters including a seam sealing service may not ship immediately.
  • The Deschutes Shelters have 44 ft2 of coverage and a setup height of 49”. Inside you have plenty of room to sit up and the extra room lets you spread out your gear. The full-length vestibule zipper makes for easy entry. The single pole pyramid structure is easy to set up and sheds winds under the harshest storms.

The Deschutes Plus has the benefit of an added No-See-Um skirt perimeter, that eliminates the need to carry a bug net to keep away those pesky mosquitoes. The skirt’s generous 18-inch width allows you flexibility in setting up the shelter at different heights.

    • Zippered Entry
    • Easy Tension Adjustment
    • Full 18" No-See-Um Skirt allows you to set up the shelter at different heights and still have excellent bug protection.
    • High Vent Allows moisture to escape, helping to minimize condensation.
    • Single Pole Setup, with hexagonal shape, provides maximum protection at minimum weight

I'm over 6', will I fit? There are many factors that determine if you'll be comfortable using the Deschutes. It depends upon the height of the setup, the depth of your sleeping pad and your sleeping style. Take a look at the picture of the Deschutes Tarp with the Serenity NetTent, the Serenity is 84" or 7' long and has vertical end walls of 9". Without the Serenity, the height is 13" at the point where the Serenity would end. Using a thick sleeping mat will compromise internal space and minimize headroom. Also setting up the Deschutes low to the ground will do the same. However, when properly setup, most people will find the Deschutes roomy enough for a good nights sleep.

What is the recommended Pole Height? The Deschutes Plus Tarp can be set up at different heights. At 40" the Deschutes hugs the ground providing maximum protection. The Deschutes can accommodate a variable height of between 45" to 49" depending upon conditions and your personal preferences. For maximum interior space or when using the Serenity NetTent, set your pole to 49". In most cases, you'll want to angle your pole so the bottom of it is inside the vestibule area. This helps to maximize the sleeping area.

    Deschutes Plus in mosquito country

I camp a lot in Florida and I'm accustomed to using a tarp style shelter. This worked well until I start pushing the boundaries of the camping season here in Florida. Mosquitoes are a huge problem in the summer and early fall; so recently I purchased the Deschutes plus with the hopes of extending my season. I took it out to a 26k acre preserve in Southern Florida and it worked amazingly well. I slept all night shirtless and on top of my liner without a single mosquito bothering me. Their numbers were so great that you could here a constant buzz in the night air. I slept soundly and will continue to use this shelter on all my Florida outings. I'd also like to mention that I did not have any condensation issues and my 6'2 frame fit comfortably inside. I'm really impressed with this product!

Awesome shelter, and exceptional customer service

I upgraded to this shelter from a very heavy 2-person tent. In addition to the weight savings, I also love how easily this sets up and how much protection it provides with the attached bug netting. I am 6' tall and have no complaints about interior space. Paired with a polycro ground sheet, I'm still in shock at how little space this takes up in my pack. One other (important) note. I somehow managed to lose the hook clip that attaches to the webbing loop on the front vestibule area. I emailed Six Moon Design's customer service asking if I could purchase a replacement for an upcoming trip. To my surprise, several days later I received a package in the mail containing this piece. To summarize, great shelter and excellent customer service!

Great shelter for a reasonable price

I use this in the Southern Appalachians: not exactly the best environment for tarps in general, given the absurdly high humidity, April through October insect pressure, frequent downpours, and muddy ground. That being said, the Deschutes Plus has been a fantastic shelter through some serious weather thus far. It's withstood 65+mph winds and moderate rain (campsite selection is key in this situation, but I've found layering polycryo over the mesh to be a passable solution as long as it's not flooding), and I've found it to knock down the wind enough for shoulder season/southern winter camping. The side tie-outs are helpful to give a bit more headspace if you're taller than 6', but I've found they aren't needed even in stronger winds. My quibbles are minor: first, the mesh could use a couple more inches of perimeter at the bottom as to not be spread so tight that it's essentially flat when set up; second, I've found it difficult to manage condensation without perfect campsite selection; third, I'd prefer silpoly for its stretch resistance at a slight weight penalty, so I don't have to re-tighten the guy lines after a couple hours. All-in-all, however, this is essentially comparable to a Zpacks Hexamid at 1/3 the price (and it wasn't blown over in the aforementioned windstorm like my friend's Hexamid). Good shelter; I'm sure a cuben version would sell like hotcakes.

I used this trap tent for my 2017 A.T. thru hike. I only got wet twice while sleeping over night in this tent and that was because of tent placement, and not the fault of the tent. Twice I have been awaken in the night because a mouse that had gotten in and could not find it's way out...Over-all, a great shelter! Light weight, lots of room for one, keeps you dry (just be careful where you pitch it), kept me comfortable, and bug free. It held up great, highly recommended.

    Amazing products and Company

First off, I had the Solo LE and absolutely loved it. I bought this shelter to replace my gear that was stolen. Six Moon designs management hooked me up and made sure that I received this as so not miss an important event. I used the Dechutes plus in conjunction with a Therm-a-Rest z mat and 30 degree bag and was absolutely 100% comfortable warm and bug free thanks to tyvek. Instead of lugging a 20 year old 5lb.free standing tent, I got to keep overall pack ultra light. I still have more gear to replace but this was the meat and potatoes of my kit. Thanks SMD, you guys rock!! I will be back for more..
