Make it ready for rain

The fabric sheds water. The stitching needs sealing before wet-weather use.

Why seal the seams?

The fabric is waterproof. The stitching isn't.

The Deschutes Tarp is silicone-coated polyester, which sheds water on its own, but the needle holes along each seam can let water through in sustained rain. Factory seam tape won't stick to silicone, so the seams need to be sealed by hand with a silicone-based sealer.

It takes about an hour of work at home plus 8 to 12 hours to cure. Or we can seal it for you before it ships, which adds 1 to 2 business days. Either way, seal it before your first rainy trip.

Deschutes Tarp - an improvement on the old WIld Oasis Tarp

My 2009 Six Moon Designs Wild Oasis finally bit the dust (blown out zipper) after 36 trips and 100 nights. I loved the simplicity, light weight, and small packed size of this tarp.

I purchased the Deschutes Tarp as it appeared to be the latest iteration of this design. I took two fall trips in the Colorado backcountry and this tarp did not disappoint. I love all the small refinements that were added to the Deschutes: adjustable tie outs, dual door flaps, and most importantly an updated design that takes stress off the zipper when opening/closing.

I'm 6'1" and sleep on a Therm-a-rest NeoAir, so it's a little snug lengthwise if I completely stretch out, but I knew that going into this purchase. For me, my mini Australian Shepherd, and our gear; it's a great little backpacking shelter.

Photos from an early October backpacking loop/summit hit of Mt. Antero, San Isabel NF, CO.

    10+ Years and Going

Every year I keep meaning to thank Six Moon Designs for this awesome piece of gear! I have used this tarp in every kind of bad weather you can think of; wind so stiff the tarp was blowing straight out like a flag and then when pitched calm inside, rain coming down in buckets and dry inside, snow coming down so hard it put out a campfire in five minutes and yet perfectly shed the snow. I've hiked hundreds of joyous miles with this barely noticeable weight in my pack, making my friends jealous with how fast it goes up and comes down. I wish I had this when I did the PCT in 1982 but it's sure easy to get your pack weight under ten pounds with this tarp. Thank you Six Moon Designs!

Passed the front country test! So, back country! Here we come!

Set it up during a rainy day just to get the first test out of the way and we stayed dry. No problem. Fits my 80 pound dog and myself (150 lbs & 5' 6"). Love the bug net around the bottom. A nice baby step for me coming from a double wall fully inclosed tent and taking this step in order to reduce my pack weight and bulk. Looking forward to taking this into the back country!

    So far, so good

After setting this up once in the park (city living;-), I took it on an overnight bike trip, along with the serenity tent and a pole. The setup went great and the net inside was surprisingly roomy, with more floor space than my Big Agnes Tiger Wall 1P. I haven't sealed it yet but I knew it would be dry and there was no problem with any condensation. I was warm and comfortable all night and was pleasantly surprised with how easy it was to enter and exit.

    My favorite shelter

Hands down my favorite shelter. I have other more expensive full tent options, but this thing rocks. I’m 6’ 1.5” and fit at a slight angle without needing to use the head or foot guy outs.
