Lunar Solo Enhanced - 23 Ounce Solo Tent

Price: $235

Lunar Duo

Description

  • Protects. . like a Tent
  • Airy. . . . like a Tarp
  • Lighter . . than a Bivy

The Award Wining Lunar Solo (formally Lunar Solo Enhanced) packs a tremendous amount of room, weather protection and features into its incredibly light 1.5 pound package. The Lunar Solo is designed to provide a comfortable home whether you find yourself atop a treeless ridge in the Colorado Rockies or weathering a summer deluge on the Appalachian Trail.

Its low hexagonal shape easily spills the wind no matter the direction. Short steeply sloped sides handle snow or high winds with ease. A generous canopy covers a 27.5 sq. ft. sleeping area plus 10 sq. ft. of vestibule storage. The 45" peak height, set in the middle of the tent maximizes room for sitting and taking care of chores.

The sleeping area is surrounded by 15" high mesh walls. The mesh ensures excellent ventilation while keeping you separated from low canopy walls. This keeps you drier on those occasions when condensation forms on the canopy.

The vestibule is set on the long side of the tent to maximize views and ventilation when fully open. Close it and you've got phenomenal protection from the worst storms.

Features

  • Full Vestibule provides protection while still maintaining good ventilation when closed. Fully open, the vestibule maximizes ventilation and view.
  • High Vent removes excess moisture build up.
  • Zipper Vestibule Closure makes opening and closing the vestibule a snap.
  • Single Piece Bathtub Floor makes a more watertight floor.
  • Easy Tensioning Adjustment makes keeping your the tent taut a trivial task that can be accomplished while still in your sleeping bag. Re-tension straps have been added to all tie out points.
  • Floating Canopy allows the canopy to be set to different heights.
  • Floating Floor reduces floor stress and helps to minimize punctures from sharp objects.
  • Optimized Sleeping Area is oriented to maximize usable space, ventilation and view. A peak height of 45 inches gives you plenty of head room.
  • Center Pole Support significantly improves the ability of the tent to handle wind and snow loads.
  • Single Hiking Pole Support reduces the amount of gear need.
  • Internal Gear Area keeps your gear easily accessible.
  • Oversized Screen Door allows easy enterance and exit while keeping the front pole out of your way.
  • Ultra-light Waterproof Canopy is made from high strength 30 denier Silicone Nylon.
  • Handy Mesh Cargo Pocket
  • Extremely Easy Setup in less than two minutes under any conditions.

WHY BUY ANYTHING ELSE
Franklin,N.C. U.S.A. 1/20/2010
Fred: purchased solo 28 oz in damascus 05,love it,many other hikers wish they had one...just plain awesome....thanks...

WELL THOUGHT OUT
Washington 10/26/2009
Dan: I came across a guy camping in one of these tents this fall and after looking at it and listening to him rave on and on about it I bought one. I have only spent two nights in it, both of which were in my back yard (strictly to test the seam sealing job) and I am very pleased. (OK, I’m a 43 year old dork who still likes to camp in the back yard) The first night I had quite a bit of condensation, but I had the rear of the tent too close to the ground. The second night I read through the reviews again before I set it up and pulled up the pictures from Bryan in California’s review. I noticed that in his pictures the pole was leaning slightly forward, and the mesh in the back of the tent was nice and upright, not sagging like mine was the first night. Herein lies the key! By leaving the rear stake out point a bit loose when you first place it and getting the correct angle on the front guy-line you get a nice tight pitch and maximize the room in the tent and the ventilation as well. I found I did not need to use the extra guy out points when the tent is pitched correctly and I’m 6’2”. For the size and weight I have not seen a better package and I currently own 7 tents. Yes, I know I have a problem… Happy camping!

STILL GOING...
virginia 10/8/2009
jackson: i have an earlier model (2006?)with a couple of velcro patches for fly but have never had a problem staying dry once i mastered set up. my tent has been everywhere from maine, the whites and used alot in va mtns. great piece of gear

AWESOME TENT
Pennsylvania 9/25/2009
Eric: I just completed an A.T. Thru hike with my dog using the Lunor Solo. Great light weight tent with lots of room for me, my dog and all of my gear.It also sets up in about a minute using one treking pole. I got 'misted' inside during heavy storms, but that is the nature of a single wall tent. Highly recommend!

INITIAL IMPRESSION
West Virginia 8/29/2009
Pat: This Lunar Solo is a replacement for a 2004(?) model, that has seen mucho use.

Likes: Still roomy with good head room, better quality silnylon, apex vent, zippered vestibule, easy adjusting tieouts, fewer seams/potential leak areas,

Dislikes: hmm, none so far.

It is seamsealed and drying; I will give it a good spray down tomorrow to assess my seamsealing job. Labor Day weekend will be the maiden voyage of the new model (and yes, I still use the old one, although the only part left is the canopy, yes me bad). The next review will be after my AT section hike at the end of September. Only giving a rating of 4 since I have not used it yet.

GREAT SOLO TENT
Southern California 8/7/2009
Don: I have used the tent on two trips, one four night trip from Mammoth Mountian to Yosemite Valley on the John Muir and one two night trip in the Golden Trout Wilderness.

The tent is incredibly light; sets up quickly; has good ventilation, although condensation can be an issue, single wall tent; enormous amount of floor space for one, headroom may be a little tight depending on your height. I'm 6 feet tall.

Overall a great solo tent, and would highly recommend the tent to anyone looking into solo tents.

The only thing I think would make the tent better is a back side tie loop about half way up, if tied to a tree or something, this would allow for a little more headroom/wiggle room without touching the tent wall.

A VERY NICE 3-SEASON TENT
Wales, UK 8/3/2009
Dave: Nearly a 5 rating but a really solid 4 instead!

Good points:

-light – 750grams (without pole)
-lots of room in the inner and vestibule
-solid
-well thought out and really easy to pitch
-very good ventilation
-the ability to draw back the vestibule fly “curtains” completely to allow unrestricted viewing from the inner

Downsides:

-Only 3-season
-inner can be restrictive due to sloping fly thus reducing effective sleeping area
-vestibule fly is high cut which reduces usefulness of vestibule area in poor weather conditions

Overall:

I really like this tarp tent and I know I will use it on high altitude fair weather jaunts if only for that fantastic ability to have a full sided unrestricted view from the inner. Its really easy to pitch and I like its simplicity. Will it replace my Laser Competition as my favourite tent? No, my Laser Comp is a much better all year round tent that gives me poor weather capabilities, but in the right conditions I will happily reach for the Lunar Solo as an option

THE PERFECT SOLO TENT
GA 5/16/2009
Anthony: I have used my lunar solo on 2 overnights and a 5 day trip in cohutta wilderness. First thing I must say is don't set it up in the field for the first time when it’s raining. My bad, I know. It was a disaster. I had the tent hugging the ground so there wasn't proper ventilation. With a steady light rain there was heavy condensation and I woke up soaked. Also without seam sealing water will run down the mesh and puddle on the floor. The second time out there was a steady moderate rain all night but with proper ventilation there was minimal condensation and everything stayed dry. The vestibule is plenty big enough for your pack, boots and wet rain gear. For my 5 day cohutta trip the weather was 80 for highs and 55 for lows with no rain. Slept with the vestibule open every night, it was awesome. The lunar solo packs smaller than any tent I’ve seen so paired with my down bag I only needed a 30 liter pack for 5 days. To be honest I was skeptical about buying a tent without ever seeing it. I now know I’ll never need another solo tent.

TAJ MAHAL OF SOLO TENTS
Virginia/USA 5/4/2009
Odie: I saw one and I bought it and since I have been using this tent four of my friends have bought one. That says a lot. Can sleep two in a pinch, so solo you your pack both fit INSIDE with room to spare. Boots have the vestibule to themselves. The sliding adjustment on the fly lets you get a view and ventilation during all but the hardest blowing rains. Cons-not freestanding and needs a fairly large area for setup. Pros- everything else.

MY FAVORITE
WA 5/3/2009
Andy: It's lighter and more compact than any bivy. I have even slept with my wife with separate pads and bags, but all the gear had to be kept in the vestibule. My first night it blew down in a severe thunderstorm. I also love my Comet

ON THE AT
TX, USA 3/24/2009
David: I used this tent on the AT from Hot Springs to Maine. The ultralight floor was impervious to stones and roots. The ventilation system system brought welcome breezes on otherwise wet and stuffy days. I chucked the stuff sack and simply crammed it into every void in my backpack. No me shifting loads!

FINALLY A TRUE ULTRALIGHT TENT--NOT TARP
California 1/29/2009
Pam: I've taken this tent a couple times up in the Sierras--once on a six-day backpack. It was easy for me to set up. You could fit two people in the tent in a pinch. I had my gear and a dog with lots of room. The only issue I had was one night when it got below freezing, I had condensation freeze on the inside of the tent. But then I had the tent pulled down tighter to the ground. I had it in moderately windy weather with no problem. I have not had it in snow. I think it is well made and for the weight, you get a lot of space. Thank you for lightening my load! (I got this as a "second", but could find no imperfections.)

IMPRESSIVE DESIGN AND PERFORMANCE
Altadena, California, USA 6/29/2008
Bryan:

I've now done about 28 nights out with my Lunar Solo E including doing the John Muir Trail in July 2007. Though I have not had the tent in any extreme conditions, it has performed very well in winds up to 25 MPH, light to moderate rain, light snow, and temperatures down to 24 F.

Setup is quick and easy, the tent (with back towards wind) is much quieter than other tents, it ventilates well, and is in all ways quite pleasing.

Various photos of my Lunar Solo E are in my photo archive at http://bryanlallen.smugmug.com/Nature .

The design feature I appreciate the most is the pentagonal floor, which has lots of room to stretch out while also laying out your loose gear in the rear portion of the tent; see this photo for an example: http://bryanlallen.googlepages.com/IMG_1452.jpg My previous solo tent was almost twice the weight and about 1/2 the floor space plus with insufficient headroom to sit up. The Lunar Solo E rocks!

PRACTICE MAKES...
Indiana 1/11/2008
Bill: This is a great tent. I am starting my third season and love the light weight, durability, and functionality. Practice with height setting and opening the fly reduces single-wall condensation. I won't leave home without it.

THE BEST SHELTER, EVER!
New York 12/22/2007
Kathryn (The Bag Lady): I hiked the AT this year using this tent for the last 1700 miles after I decided that a hammock was just too cozy for so many months on the trail. This was the piece of gear that I bragged most about! It was very lightweight, easy to set up (once I learned how to do it when the trail was rocky), plenty of room for me and my gear inside, and mostly dry when it rained (although the condensation did mist on me in heavy rain, my down bag resisted being impacted by that minimal level of moisture). I was a "happy camper" and looked forward to the end of the day and crawling into my Six Moons tent...my home away from home.

MY FAVORITE TENT
Texas/USA 10/23/2007
Pat: The Lunar Solo E is by far my favorite tent. Its light, tough and easy to set up. The zippered vestibule is a great improvement over the old velcro closure. There is a remarkable amount of room inside the tent, and I have no problem changing clothes, organizing gear, etc. I love Ron`s products (I have 2 Lunars, a Gatewood Cape, a Europa and a Comet pack). The thoughtfulness in design, quality workmanship and customer service are unequaled.

SOLO EXTREME
Paris France 12/31/2006
french bob: hello, i have hiked 1500 miles on the PCT last summer with this little shelter, i have been in miserable weather in Washington state, 6 days of non-stop rain, i have been wet like anyone on the trail but i love my shelter, it's so light and durable, my only complaint is about the wind, in 3 sisters wilderness i never slept because of the flap noise the tent made in the 50 mph wind storm, but i just hiked death valley in december and my lunar solo was just perfect.

GREAT IN THE WIND
Washington 9/18/2006
Jay: Did a 2 night at Windy Pass and my Lunar tent held up well. The many adjustable straps makes it quick to setup and keep the tent tight in the high wind. I used my hiking pole and everything stayed up and I slept well. Great tent.

LUNAR SOLO
Indiana 8/11/2006
Brian: I have been thoroughly impressed with this tent. Forced to cut weight because of knee issues, I found this tent (July 2005) to be the next candidate to replace my MSR Mircozoid. After one use, I noticed the stitching coming undone at the peak where the trekking pole supports the roof. I notified Ron of this and a week later, my (fixed) tent was waiting for its next use. While hiking through Mammoth Cave National Park last November, a tornado touched down about 10 miles from where we have made camp. I expected possible damage or at least puddles in the corners when the sun rose. To my surprise, I had none of the above. The tent sagged a little, but can you blame it? We experienced 70-90 mph gusts that uprooted nearby trees. I spent one of the coldest nights out in the Lunar Solo as well. While camped at Savage Gulf, TN, the evenings temp made it down to 14 degrees. While the tent is somewhat open, I had no frost build up inside. This is a quality tent! I would, and probably will purchase additional items from Six Moons in the future.

LUNAR SOLO E
Washington USA 7/31/2006
Scott: Just got back from a three day backpack and finally got to try out my Six Moon Designs Lunar Solo E. Not much of a challenge for the tent as the weather was perfect but I can make the following observations. Tent set up tight and strong with one trekking pole, or I could have used the optional support pole I ordered, (which I swapped out the following day when I went on a day hike.)The netting rose up 15 inches around the interior of the tent as advertised so neither my sleeping bag or other gear touched the single wall portion of the tent. At 27 square feet I had an excess of room for myself and gear to store inside the tent. I’m almost six feet and I had no problem with headroom. It was really nice to roll up the 10 square foot vestibule and sleep in front of a huge window looking over a lake. Exit and entry were easy through a big D shaped door. Set up and take down after practicing at home a few times were simple in the field and I was able to fit a small campsite with a very nice view.

LUNAR SOLO
Colorado 7/25/2005
Dick:
  • Options: Original model in gray with 70 denier silnylon floor.
  • Price: $183.00 including shipping
  • Weight: 27.9 oz after seam sealing.

This tent brings together many of the superior design features from other light weight tents.

The basic design is similar to the Dancing Light Gear Tacoma Solo Shelter. The Lunar solo has a very generous peak height, but the best part is the location of the peak. The peak is over your body's center of gravity when you are prone. That way you can sit up without having to relocate your center of gravity to under the peak. This tent has more useful sit-up room that either the TarpTent Squall or Stephenson 2R.

The ventilation gap between the canopy and the ground as well as the bath tub floor are very similar to the features found on Shires TarpTents.

The high vent on the vestibule and the easy tensioning adjustments are similar to features found on the Stephenson Warmlite tents.

A unique design feature is that the canopy extends over the netting. The interior netting wall separates your sleeping bag from possible condensation on the canopy.

The 27.5 sq. ft. interior space is roomy for a single person tent. Compare that to the 15.9 sq. ft. in an MSR MicroZoid or the 31 sq. ft. in the 2 person Sierra Designs Lightning.

The vestibule is big enough to store a pack and shoes and have enough room left over to fire up your stove for breakfast in bed.. Insert standard warning to never use the vestibule for cooking.

The tent material are good and the sewing is very professional. The seams are straight with few missed threads. Frankly, I do not worry much about seam sealing, however the seams that hold the netting along the edges of the canopy probably need to be seam sealed.

Some adjustments are needed because of the slick silnylon floors. I carry a RidgeRest pad that is used for a sit pad during hiking breaks, in a TermaRest Trekker Chair in camp, and under the Lunar Solo at night. When I seam sealed the tent the leftover seam sealer was used in a random pattern on the slick side of an inflatable TermaRest pad. From the ground up the layers are the RidgeRest, the tent floor, then the inflatable pad that is protected by both the closed cell pad and tent floor. The seam sealer keeps the pad from sliding around.

When the rear guy line is used the back and sides of the tent shed wind with very little deflection. When the vestibule is left open the tent is vulnerable to winds from the front. An additional guy line from the peak tie out to a stake or natural anchor with an extra cord can be used if you suspect a wind shift.

In good weather I leave the vestibule completely open and tied to the side. In mixed weather I velcro the vestibule then move the Prusik knot on the vestibule hook up as far as possible. It is easy to enter and exit the tent with the vestibule attached and pulled up next to the peak. It is very easy to pull the vestibule down from inside, but it is not easy to attach the velcro from inside. At first I left the vestibule half open, but the flapping was too noisy.

My model does not have the high vent on the vestibule, but I have never experienced condensation problems. When the air is still I leave the vestibule open, and when there is enough air movement that the vestibule needs to be closed then there is enough ventilation to prevent the condensation.

Options

Optional Ultralight Floor

The Lunar Solo comes standard with a floor of 70 Denier Silicone Nylon. which has many of the properties of traditional tent floors. The Silicone coated floor offers the added advantage of not mildewing or delaminating, as happens with Polyurethane coated floors.

If you select the Ultralight Floor option, additional care should be taken in site selection of your tent. While it's waterproof, your body weight can force water through the floor if it pools under the tent. An additional layer of 3MM plastic cloth placed under the tent can minimize this effect.
