Backpacks

When you're considering purchasing an ultralight pack, it's not as simple as buying a pack, loading in your gear and heading for the high country. Making an ultralight pack work for you involves learning how to properly balance a number of factors, pad selection, gear weight and volume, packing strategies and fit. Failure to get one or more of these factors correct, can lead to some uncomfortable trail miles.

So take some time before you purchase your pack to see if you're truly ready to take the ultralight plunge. We'd recommend making your pack the last item of gear purchased. Remember, It's easier to carry ultralight gear in a traditional pack than traditional gear in an ultralight pack. More than one person has attempted to load 40 pounds in an ultralight pack and paid dearly for it. Make sure you're not next.

Once you've acquired your pack, take sometime to get to know it. Load your gear, adjust your pack and take it for a stroll. If something isn't working change it before heading out on a hike. If you got stays, try bending them into different positions. If your pushing the limits on your pack, you may consider a different pad that'll offer more support. You also may need to rearrange the layout of gear in your pack. Often a minor change can make a world of difference. For more information, check out our Pack FAQ.

Good luck and have fun!
